Unification of Orders regulating the accounting profession in Quebec

Unification of Orders regulating the accounting profession in Quebec

In Quebec, the Act authorizing chartered professional accountants came into force on May 16, 2012. The accounting profession is now governed by a single Order: the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés (CPA) du Québec, three Orders (CA, CGA, CMA) were unified to form this new Order.

The four fundamental objectives underlying the creation of the Ordre des CPA are to:

  • best position the profession to protect the public through a common certification program and a single set of high ethical and practice standards;
  • enhance and protect the value of the designation in an increasingly competitive and global environment;
  • contribute to the sustainability and prosperity of the accounting profession;
  • govern the accounting profession in an effective and efficient manner.

For a period of ten years after the Act comes into force, these professionals will hold a dual designation, i.e. the new designation followed by their original designation (CA, CGA or CMA).
